Main Campus Password Change Policy

April 15, 2008

Main Campus I.T. Department is forcing password changes on their servers. WebAdvisor is a service offered from main campus, and the Law School must comply with their policies in order to access their servers. This only affects the password to the main campus WebAdvisor application, it does not affect your user account at the Law School that gives access to printing, email, the wireless network, file storage and CulsNet.

MAIN CAMPUS PASSWORD CHANGE POLICY COMING
When was the last time you changed your password?

Recent security audits and common practice has forced I.T. to implement a password change policy on campus. On April 15 we will implement a 90-day password change policy forcing all users to change their passwords. I.T. is asking all main campus faculty, staff and students to go to https://pwchange.capital.edu and change their password before April 15, 2008.

I.T. apologizes for the short timeframe and any inconvenience this may cause, but this is a necessary step to improve the security on campus. …
This change went into effect today. If you have had an account to get on WebAdvisor for more than 90 days, you will not be able to get into the application again until you change the password. I have created detailed steps to assist with this process (see below), but should you have questions feel free to call or email us for assistance (236-6432 or it@law.capital.edu). The passwords will need to be reset every 90 days from this point forward.

a. User ID in WebAdvisor is your Student ID. Your Student ID is a seven digit number. Student ID cards created in the last three years probably have this number displayed on the front of their student ID card. If you cannot find your Student ID number, go to the Office of Records and Registration to have it retrieved for you.

b. The default password to get to into the main campus password changing system the first time is your first digit of first name, first digit of last name, last four digits of Social Security Number, with Law (capitalization sensitive) at the end. The password is case sensitive. The password contains only one capital letter, the L in Law. These instructions are also at: https://culsnet.law.capital.edu/webadvisor/AccountInformation.asp

c. With the password formula and Student ID available, one needs to change their password to something unique by going to https://pwchange.capital.edu

i. When attempting to access https://pwchange.capital.edu, there will likely be a notice that the certificate has a problem. Go ahead and accept this certificate and continue.

ii. Enter your Student ID Number in the Username field.

iii. Enter the formula from Section b. into the old password field.

iv. Follow criteria on left of the password change website for new password creation.

v. Once the password change is entered twice and the submit button is pushed, please wait for a new page in black and white to appear. Note: There is no indication that the page is running (no green bar across the bottom of the page or an hour glass) but waiting for two-four minutes does give a redirect to a black and white webpage. This page will indicate success or failure in changing the password.

vi. After receiving a successful password change, go to https://webadvisor.capital.edu/WALAW/WALAW and log in with User ID and the new password.
