4.1.08 CONCENTRATIONS. Upon graduation,
students who have earned A MINIMUM OF 11 credit hours in a particular
concentration will receive a "Certificate of Concentration"
and an entry on their official transcript. Concentrations are offered
only in those fairly narrow and focused areas of law where the law school
offers enough courses so that students may acquire 11 credit hours worth
of depth. Concentrations must be approved by the Law School Council,
after consideration by the Curriculum Committee. A full-time and part-time
student entering the Law School beginning 1998 and 1997, respectively,
must earn a minimum of a 2.8 grade point average in the courses taken
to satisfy the concentration. Students entering law school before these
designated dates must earn a minimum grade of 2.67 in each course taken
to satisfy the concentration. Below are currently-approved concentrations
and their specific requirements:
A. Labor and Employment Law. In this concentration, students
must complete 11 credit hours of course work in the program. Students
must also fulfill their upper-class writing requirement by a course
in the program or with an approved independent study.
1. REQUIRED: Labor Law and either Employment Law or
Employment Discrimination.
2. ELECTIVES: Labor Arbitration; Employment Law; Employment
Discrimination; Sex-Based Discrimination; Civil Rights; Federal Courts;
Administrative Law; Immigration & Naturalization; Workers' &
Unemployment Compensation; Dispute Resolution; Externships; Independent
Research; and no more than one of (1) Mediation Practicum, (2) Interviewing
& Counseling, and (3) Interviewing, Counseling, & Negotiation.
B.
Governmental Affairs. In this concentration, students must complete 15 credit
hours of course work in the program. Students must also fulfill their upper-class
writing requirement by a course in the program or with an approved independent
study.
1. REQUIRED: Administrative Law, Legislation, and
Local Government Law.
2. ELECTIVES: Agricultural Law; Antitrust and Trade
Regulation; Consumer Law; Energy Law; Environmental Law; Water Pollution
Law and Policy; Air Pollution Law and Policy; Hazardous Waste Law
and Policy; Health Law; Land Use Controls; School Law; State and
Local Tax; Unfair Trade Practices; Civil Rights; Election Law; Labor
Law; Employment Law; Employment Discrimination; Federal Courts; Externships;
and no more than one of (1) Dispute Resolution, (2) Interviewing & Counseling,
(3) Negotiation, (4) Environmental Law Practicum (5) Mediation and
(6) Mediation Practicum.
C. Small Business Entities. In this concentration students
must complete at least 11 credit hours of course work in the program.
1. REQUIRED: Corporate Finance and Taxation of Business
Entities
2. ELECTIVES: Entrepreneurship Law, Business Planning
Practicum, Limited Liability Companies, Securities Regulation, Corporate
Tax, Subchapter S Corporations & Advanced Pass-Through Entities,
Partnership Tax, and Unfair Trade Practices
D. Publicly-Held Companies. In this concentration, students
must complete at least 11 credit hours of course work in the program.
1. REQUIRED: Corporate Finance, Corporate Taxation
and Securities Regulations
2. ELECTIVES: Anti-Trust and Trade Regulation, Business
Planning Practicum, Limited Liability Companies and Unfair Trade Practices
and Taxation of Business Entities
E. Environmental Law. In this concentration, students
must complete 11 credit hours of course work in the program. Students
must also fulfill their upper-class writing requirement by a course
in the program or with an approved independent study.
1. REQUIRED: Environmental Law and at least two of
the following: Water Pollution Law and Policy; Air Pollution Law and
Policy; Hazardous Waste Law and Policy; and Environmental Law Practicum
2. ELECTIVES: Water Pollution Law and Policy; Air Pollution
Law and Policy; Hazardous Waste Law and Policy; Environmental Law
Practicum; Land Use Controls; Energy Law; Legislation, Administrative
Law.
F. Dispute Resolution. In this concentration, students
must complete 11 credit hours of course work in the program.
1. REQUIRED: Dispute Resolution and at least one of
the following: Negotiation; Mediation; Mediation Skills Practicum
2. ELECTIVES: Dispute Resolution Seminar; Negotiation;
Mediation; Mediation Skills Practicum; Interviewing & Counseling;
Interviewing, Counseling & Negotiation; Labor Arbitration; Legal
Clinic; Mediation Clinic; and Trial Advocacy
G. Children and Family Law. In this concentration, students
must complete 11 credit hours of course work in the program.
1. REQUIRED: Family Law
2. REQUIRED ELECTIVES: Must take at least two of the
following: Children, Families and the State, Elder Law; Adoption Law;
Juvenile Law; Family Advocacy Clinic; Sexual Orientation and the Law
3. ELECTIVES: Administrative Law; Legislation; School
Law; Sex Based Discrimination; Trusts & Estates courses (may only
sue one): Estates and Trusts, Decedents’ Estates, Trusts and
Future Interests, Estate and Gift Taxation; Skills courses (may only
use one): Mediation, Interviewing and Counseling, Dispute Resolution;
Other (prior approval required): Externships, Independent Research,
Seminar in related subject area, OSU Courses (student must also obtain
separate approval of the Associate Dean).
