My externship was a great experience. It was probably one of the best educational experiences I have had throughout all of law school.…I learned things at my externship that you cannot learn in class and that I cannot imagine going into the practice of law without having experienced to some degree.…I…recommend it to any student who wants to improve their writing skills, see how judicial decisions are made, observe real trials from a perspective most will never know and meet some really good people in the process.

Externship at Federal District Court, Judge Frost – 2008

Out of all the classes I have taken in law school so far, my externship experience tops them all. I truly believe the extern program at Capital is absolutely amazing for law students to get a real feel for how the law works outside the classroom. Not only do I believe I got a better feel for how the law is applied out of school, but I feel that I have made valuable connections.…I have learned that networking and making connections (are) very important, considering the competitive nature of acquiring a job upon graduation. I definitely plan on doing another externship before I graduate, because I have realized that (having an externship) is an amazing experience.

Looking back, I must say that being an extern this semester was the smartest decision I’ve made so far in law school. It has really opened my eyes to things that would never have made sense in a classroom. A professor can try and explain what the real world expects of you as a lawyer, but witnessing it first hand is the only real way not to be shell-shocked when you graduate from law school.

Overall, I think the externship program has been very beneficial to me….The students who do not participate in this program now are doing themselves a serious disservice. It enabled me to get practical experience, decide exactly what I wanted to do after I graduated, and provided me with a prestigious employment opportunity that I could add to my resume. I would recommend taking an externship to any law student who wants to get experience and learn a few things about the real practice of law.

This…experience has met every expectation that I had for doing a judicial externship. Not only did I advance my writing skills but I was able to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience as a law student working in a Justice’s chambers. I was able to experience what goes on behind the scenes and learn more about the legwork that goes into deciding major cases and how they are decided.
