Q:My acceptance letter indicated that I was selected to participate in Summer ASP. Does that mean I am required to attend?
A: Yes. If your acceptance letter explains that you’ve been selected to attend ASP, it means that attendance is a condition for your admission.
Q: If my acceptance letter states that I have been selected to participate in ASP, do I still have to register?
A: Yes. You have a guaranteed spot, but you must still register via the registration web page.
Q: Do other people know that I am being referred to ASP?
A: No. You are notified privately on your ASP obligations. ASP is also open to an additional 50 students for a total of 100 ASP students. The only people who know whether a student was required to attend are the student, Professor Bodine, and a very few key administrators and Deans.
Q: May I choose the Day or Evening Protocol?
A: Yes, but the incoming evening students will have priority over day students for purposes of scheduling. There is only one evening session, so we encourage students to attend the section they will be a part of once school commences. Sections are limited to 25 students each so as to guarantee the most effective student-teacher ratio.
Q: Do I need to purchase books for ASP?
A: No. All the substantive material is provided free of charge. You should plan on bringing a notebook and a pen. We will provide you with everything you need at orientation.
Q: Is there a dress code for ASP?
A: Yes. You are to wear business attire for orientation and for convocation and your matriculation to law school after ASP concludes. During ASP, scholars are to wear business casual dress – pressed slacks and button-down shirt is ideal.
Q: Must I attend all of the ASP classes?
A: Yes, especially if you were selected to participate. Students must earn a Certificate of Completion in order to continue their legal studies.
If you have been selected to participate in the Protocol, you are also obligated to attend ASP during the Fall Term. We meet once a week and I coach my students through their first semester of law school.
Q: Will I get to interact with my Professors and 2L and 3L students?
A: Yes. You will find that Capital’s professors remarkably accessible. They will spend time chatting with you after class and will meet with you if you ask to set up meeting.
You will interact with our 2L and 3L students, who were part of ASP. Several of them are now executive editors of the law review. Several panel discussion will be offered to that you can pick seek out their advice. The ASP Fellows will also teach a class with no Professor in attendance. You will be able to ask the “real” questions you want to ask in confidence.
Q: Does ASP help incoming students become better law students?
A: Yes! Students who participate on a regular have exceptional grades. Several ASP students made law review last year, a few are executive editors of the law review, and a number of ASP students were selected to participate on the National Moot Court Team.
Q: Doesn’t ASP add another burden to the 1L student during their first term?
A: No. ASP coaches you through every week of law school. There is never any homework, and we engage in a lot of collaborative skill-set exercises.
